Update from the Chairman

It is an honor to serve the next 2 years as your Chairman of the Board of Governors. It’s a great pleasure to write to you as we look ahead to a remarkable milestone in the history of Shriners Children’s Lexington.

In 2026, we will celebrate 100 years of unwavering dedication to providing hope and healing to children and families here in Lexington. This centennial is not just a reflection of time passed — it is a tribute to the countless lives we have touched and the unwavering generosity of Shriners, donors, and partners who have made this mission possible.

For a century, we have been a beacon of specialized pediatric care, offering world-class treatment regardless of a family’s ability to pay. What started as a compassionate vision of the Shriners in 1926 has grown into an institution known for groundbreaking treatments, innovative research, and, most importantly, transforming the lives of children.

Over the decades, we have expanded our expertise, advancing care in orthopedics all while keeping our focus on the individual needs of every child. We welcome children from across the country — and around the world — giving them not just medical care, but the chance for a brighter future.

This is made possible because of all the countless hours and dedication, you have devoted to support our communities, the fraternity, and most importantly, the hospital.

On behalf of the Board of Governors, I want to thank each of you. Your dedication ensures that Shriners Children’s Lexington remains a place of hope and healing for generations to come.

Sincerely,
Don Brockman

In case you missed it...

Graduating from care

Zachary, a 19-year-old from Bowling Green, officially graduated from care! He started coming to Shriners Children’s Lexington 4 years ago to receive care for scoliosis and back pain. Now, thanks to the care our amazing staff provides, Zachary is pain-free and thriving! He trains hard in the gym, often competing in the Special Olympics. How cool is that?! And now that he’s graduated from our care (and soon, high school!), he plans to join his dad’s business. We can’t wait to see all that he accomplishes!

Daisy Nomination

Congratulations to Jenna for receiving a DAISY nomination! DAISY nominees are nurses who go above and beyond every day to not only provide patients and families with excellence in clinical care but also compassion. Thank you, Jenna, for the care and kindness you provide at Shriners Children’s Lexington!

All smiles!

Rosalie’s newfound mobility, thanks to her care at Shriners Children’s Lexington, comes with exciting possibilities. Now that Rosalie has achieved her dream of wearing her first pair of “real shoes,” she has her eyes set on exploring activities she’s never been able to try before. | Read Rosalie's story

Stepping into the spotlight

A huge thank you to Lexington patient, Shelby, for stepping in front of the camera to share her story for an upcoming conference. Shelby, 14 years old and from Louisville, has a congenital upper limb deficiency. She recently swapped her myoelectric prosthesis for a body-powered one — giving her even more freedom to do what she loves! Stay tuned for a full story!

En route

It was a pleasure hosting Brarry, a Shriner and associate member of the Shriners Children’s Ohio Board of Governors, and his wife, Barbara, for a quick tour of Shriners Children’s Lexington! Brarry and Barbara are on the road in their classic car, touring multiple Shriners Children’s locations and raising awareness about the care we provide!

‘Drivers, start your engines!’

Grayson, a Shriners Children's Lexington patient and one of our system's International Patient Ambassadors, was at Phoenix Raceway for the Shriners Children's 500, a NASCAR Cup Series race, in March. Grayson had the honor of serving as Grand Marshal, declaring the iconic line, “Drivers, start your engines!” He was among the other Shriners Children's patient ambassadors on hand to help tell the story of the amazing care Shriners Children's provides, demonstrating resilience, perseverance and pure joy. In addition to the inspiring patient activations, some cars drove really fast in a circle. It was a close race, and in the end, driver Christopher Bell was the fastest, capturing his third consecutive NASCAR win and back-to-back victories at the Shriners Children’s 500. Congratulations to Grayson and Christopher!

A St. Paddy's Celebration

We celebrated St. Patrick's Day in style! Special thanks to the Oleika Ladies for donating goody bags for patients and making the day extra fun!

From Patient to Powerlifter

Born with hereditary bilateral clubfoot, Zack faced challenges from his earliest days. His family was unable to afford any sort of treatment but found hope and help through Shriners Children's Lexington, where he went on to receive life-changing care.

By the time he was just 6 months old, Zack had undergone surgery at the medical center. From there, his grandparents would travel from Tennessee to take Zack to Lexington for treatment over the years.

Initially, Zack was in casts until he was 4 years old. This led to Zack’s upper body being overdeveloped as an infant and his lower body underdeveloped throughout his youth.

Now 30, Zack knew he wanted to give back somehow. He decided to organize his first-ever powerlifting event to raise money for Shriners Children’s Lexington – the very place where the dedicated medical staff helped him gain the ability to walk, run and chase his dreams.

Daughters of the Nile Foundation celebration

What an exciting event we had with the Daughters of the Nile Foundation celebrating reaching $3 million dollars of giving to Shriners Children’s Lexington! We were honored to have Dr. Leslie Stewart, president and chairman of the Board of Trustees, and his lady, Megan. They were joined by the Board of Directors of the Daughters of the Nile Foundation, Jackie Holloway, Supreme Queen of the Supreme Temple; and so many others in attendance! Special thanks to our patient, Clara, for giving tours and telling her story, and to our staff who helped make the event a success. And a HUGE thank you to the Daughters of the Nile Foundation for their generous support of our mission!

Patient Alumni Network offers opportunity to stay connected with Shriners family

Do you know a former Shriners Children’s patient looking to connect with our healthcare system and other former patients? Encourage them to join the Patient Alumni Network!

The Patient Alumni Network was formed in 2022 as part of our 100th Anniversary Celebration. The goal of the network is to connect former patients with each other and provide opportunities for them to share their stories and accomplishments with other patients, Shriners, donors and the public. This might include attendance at Shriners Children's and Shriners International events, in addition to other functions.

Each and every person who has been cared for at Shriners Children's has a story to tell and we look forward to connecting or reconnecting with them and sharing their inspirational stories with others.

Ways patients can be involved when they join the Patient Alumni Network:

  • Share their story with others
  • Attend events
  • Lead this group
  • Get discounted tickets to national Shriners Children's sporting events
